Successful IT outsourcing depends on a well-structured relationship rather than a low price alone. A partner with fixed monthly fees, clear SLAs and disciplined reporting can deliver better results at a lower total cost.
Six rules
- Itemize the scope using specific services rather than a vague promise of complete IT
- Make SLAs measurable: response times, resolution times and reporting frequency
- Keep knowledge transfer two-way: your provider should learn your business, and you should understand theirs
- Define confidentiality and access controls clearly in the contract
- Maintain the relationship through monthly service reviews
- Agree an exit plan on day one to avoid lock-in
Warning signs
Be wary of excessive promises. A quote without SLAs is generic. A provider that does not offer tailored planning is acting as a vendor rather than a partner. Speak with previous clients before signing.
IT outsourcing is a long-term business partnership. Evaluate it accordingly.
